Belvoir Castle

This border won the Duchess of Rutland Cup 2021 (best in show) at Belvoir Castle. It represents our experiences of the Covid 19 pandemic, during which many people had no outside space or access to the countryside. Our emergence from the lockdown is represented by the border’s chromatic transition from darkness to light.

Sonja’s use of structure and planting choices such as Achillea ‘Terracotta’ and Anthemis ‘E.C. Buxton’ articulate the emergence of sunlight from shade. Sonja has used native species such as Digitalis lutea (foxglove), Sorbus aucuparia (Rowan) and Verbena off. grandiflora ‘Bampton’ paying homage to the local landscape which has been a comfort to so many throughout the pandemic. Blocks of exuberant, colourful, uplifting planting explodes from an abstract black tunnel, symbolising emotions of freedom, joy, happiness and especially – hope.

Sonja’s design demonstrates how anyone can incorporate a slice of an abstract and vibrant countryside border into their outside space, however small.

This garden was relocated to the bug hotel at the Victoria Leeds shopping centre. You can view the project, which one another award here.
