Kalkschmidt Landscape & Garden Design

We are an award-winning garden and landscape design studio whose designs are driven by a creative boldness and an acute sensitivity to setting. Our work ranges in complexity and scale from small gardens to expansive rural heritage sites. Each project thoughtfully balances the character of the land, the identity of the architecture and the lifestyles of the people who use the space.

Our design is underpinned by the desire to mould a connection between people and place, creating a seamless interplay between house, garden and landscape. Planting and materials pay homage to local heritage and flora and this, juxtaposed with our signature bold architectural stamp, makes for a deeply arresting design statement.

Approach

Our approach is client and site-centerd and every project begins with listening, observing and exploring. We pick up visual cues from the site, such as its terrain and native planting, and use these to respond to and interact with. This carefully-honed attentiveness to the setting of a site helps us blur the distinction between architecture and landscape, heightening the contrast between the designed garden and the wild landscape. Our schemes therefore evoke a true sense of belonging, appearing as if to have emerged from the site organically.

Our design approach is communicated with clarity through sketches, images and diagrams which help us develop a narrative for the site. Our signature sketches up both the aesthetic and soul of the garden, offering a clear visual impression of the garden’s design and atmosphere.

Sonja Kalkschmidt
Our style is owing to Sonja Kalkschmidt’s background: she trained as an architect and worked on a variety of construction projects from small domestic buildings to project managing one of the biggest building sites in the world. Her portfolio includes work in India, Macau, Switzerland and Germany – where she was born and raised. She now lives in the middle of three distinctive landscapes: the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.

Sonja holds a Diploma in Garden Design from the London College of Garden Design at KEW, which she completed as one of the top five outstanding students. Her first show garden at Belvoir Castle in 2021 received the Duchess of Rutland Cup (Best in Show).
